Frequently Asked Questions

What does CSA stand for?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.  It could best be described as a subscription service for fresh healthy food.

Do I return my box?

Absolutely, it is a requirement.  Please sit the empty box out the day of your delivery to be exchanged for a full.  The box that your share is delivered in remains the property of the farm. Do Not Recycle it.  Do Not Let Your Children Deface it.  Unreturned or damaged boxes will be charged to your account at a rate of $3.50-$5.00 per box/ depending on your share size.

Where can I pick up my box?

Please see our detailed list of delivery location options.  It can be found by clicking on Join Our CSA.  We make deliveries all over the Northern Shenandoah Valley, Northern Virginia and Washington D.C.

What is a Full Share?

A full share is a subscription level that is designed for a family of 4 who enjoy eating at home.  This share could feed more if the family eats out often.

What is a Half Share?

A half share is a subscription level that is designed for a couple.  It could feed more or less depending on your lifestyle.

What is a Single Share?

A single share is a subscription level that is designed for a person who lives alone.

Who should not join a CSA?

Over the years we have been able to identify folks who should not join a CSA.  If you fall into one of these categories, our services are most likely not for you.

  • Out of town for many weeks
  • Don’t like to cook or eat at home
  • Don’t like vegetables
  • Don’t like to try new foods
  • Must know exactly what will be on the menu days ahead of time.

Do you give refunds?

Can I change my delivery location?

Can I visit the farm?

No, as farmers we are very busy and need to focus on our daily responsibilities. We do not have staff dedicated to meet and greet our members on a daily basis.

Do you offer gift certificates?

Yes, we do.  CSA memberships are an excellent choice for anniversay, wedding, and Christmas gifts.  Please contact by phone or email these are made on a one by one basis and are not availalbe electronically

Can members share a box?

Yes you can share a membership.  We advise you to only split full shares.  The full share gives the best chance of making an equitable division. The shares are divided by the customer not Shallowbrooke Farm.  We only interact with the customer whose name is on the enrollment.

What do I do about my vacation?

With so many members we are unable to keep track of everyone’s vacation time.  Have a friend/neighbor/family member pick up for you.  Often these shares will last until you return if stored properly. Shares can be put on hold via your account login but will not be creditied

Can I choose which veggies are in the box?

No, we offer a variety of fresh produce in season.  Every box is packed with the same selection of produce, according to what is being harvested that week.  There may be some differences in shares as we don’t always have enough product to make each box identical.

Do we still need to wash the vegetables we receive in our box?

Yes, although most of the product has been washed and sorted it is still a good idea to wash at home.  Some of the root crops may need extra rinsing.

Is Shallowbrooke Farm organic?

The quick answer is no, Shallowbrooke Farm is not certified organic.  With this being said we do make every effort to keep spray material to a minimum.  It is possible that depending on time of year certain crops will not see anything added other than clean water.
